Learn Something New

On Friday July 8th, 46 people participated in our morning scramble. First low gross went to Don Powell, Bob Allen, Chris Harris, and Thela Leach with a 30. Second low gross went to Phil McFarland, Sam Ostrow, and Vinal Torrey with a 32. First low putts went to Jack Moser, Paul Landry, Charles Miller, and Nancy Lerner with a 10 and second low putts went to Bob Muskat, Harrison Clark, and Dave Goddard with a 10. Closest to the pin for the women was Jean Hutchinson with 5’ 10” and for the men Don Powell with 12’ 7”.

In Twilight League news, Myron Curtis and Bob Campbell STILL have low gross and low net with a 164 and a 125. Can anyone else conquer these two?

The men and ladies are currently playing their President’s Cup matches. As of Tuesday at noon, these guys are still in the running: DonPowell, Kenny Wiberg, Verne Seile, Vito Corsini, Walt Epply, Charlie Odenweller, Jack Shaw, Dick Dunham, Connor Morey, Randy Shepard, Jack Moser, Kendall McGuffie, Greg Aldrich, Keith Hoover, Bill Whitman, Ryan Hayward, Stroud Watson, Sam Grindle, and Vinal Torrey. For the women these ladies are still in the running: Barbara Marquis, Judy Darby, Jean Hutchinson, Karen Egerton, and Karen Galella.

Wednesday men’s golf decided to report the results of their Larry Ball festivities. Larry ball is a game that Bill Darby introduced to the club. It’s origins are from a course that Mr. Darby has played at where a man named Larry Dean owns the course and thus sets the rules. When you play golf with Dean, you get a mulligan on every shot. First place was a tie between Roger Leach and Charlie Odenweller with a net score of 26. Second place was a tie with Joe Bruno and Avery Falkner with a net score of 27. Howard Morgan was “just out of the money” by half a stroke for a net of 27.5. For those not in the know, Larry Ball means on every shot, you get a mulligan. A mulligan means you get to take a shot over again. And now you’ve learned something new.

On Monday July 11th, four tables of bridge players enjoyed cake and cookies made by Mary Newman and Joan Sorensen. The winners were first place, Don Powell with 3,210 points, second place, Josh Knight with 2,950 points, third place, David Morrish with 2,660 points and fourth place, Len Spector 2,640 points. Members and non-members are welcome at 7pm on Mondays throughout the summer to join bridge. Come with or without a partner. Thanks to Mimi Gerstell for reporting the results!

On July 12th, ladies golf was a scramble on a muggy hot Tuesday. Low gross went to Marilyn Schroer, Nancy Eaton, Helen MacTaggert, and Jean Hutchinson 35. Second low gross Thela Leach, Emily Schofield, Betty Keane, and Carol Hawthorne with a 37. Low putts went to Mimi Gerstell, Linda Stratton, Barbara Whitman, and Suzanne Banghart with 10. Marilyn Schroer had a chip in on number 2.

Upcoming tennis and golf tournaments:

Ladies Tri-Club at Blue Hill Country Club July 20

Member-Guest Tennis Tournament July 23

ICC Hosts Buck’s Harbor Yacht Club Tennis July 29th

Member Member Golf Tournament July 31st

We would like to congratulate Tom and Marilyn Mehalic on the arrival of their grandson Mason Thomas! Congratulations and we can’t wait to have him join us at the Club!

We hosted a wonderful 50th anniversary party for Ken and Sally Gillett planned by their loving family. I had a request from grandkids Ned Gresham and Timmy Hermansen to see their name in print. They are two inquisitive young lads who like to come into the Country Club and brighten Karen and my day. They gave Karen a hard time until she got “pop-pop’s” name for his hole in one on the wall (Pop-pop is their grandfather, Ken.)

A New Chapter in ICC History

For some a Deer Isle Fourth Of July weekend means fireworks, family, cookouts, the annual parade in Deer Isle village, and more. At the Club this weekend, we not only embraced the opening of the newly expanded course, but we also embraced a new chapter in the history of the ICC. We get to experience history in the making at the Club on a daily basis. A father teaching his son how to swing a club for the first time, generations of children, grandchildren, cousins, and siblings all joining as members and spending time as a family out on the greens. Watching a young boy with a passion for golf, who learned how to play on our course, become a teacher and make a living off of it (I’m looking at you Shaun Webb.) Each day is another snapshot in what makes the Club such a unique spot on the Island and such a crucial part of this Island’s history.

With that being said, we are excited for what is to come and we could only hope that you will join us in your own history and become part of ours.

On Friday July 1st, the course was packed with over 70 players. The excitement and fun was exceptional. Why? Because this Scramble was the first scramble and the first time playing on the newly expanded course! 1st low gross with a 29 went to John Shanklin, Jesse Shanklin, Rob Groundwater, and Bob Bradbury. 2nd low gross with a 30 went to Bill Whitman, Jon Hellstedt, Bob Allen, and Dave Barber. 1st low net with 22 went to Myron Curtis, Mary Lou Curtis, Bill Darby, and Judy Darby. 2nd low net with a 22 went to Don Powell, Dick Newman, Ginny Perry, and Mimi Gerstell. 1st low putts with a 7 went to Barbara Keyes, Helen MacTaggert, Dana Douglass, and Stroud Watson. 2nd low putts with a 9 went to Barbara Whitman,Suzanne Banghart, Kendall McGuffie, and Joe Bruno. Closest to the pin for the women was Emily Schofield with 6 feet 2 inches and for the men Rob Groundwater with 3 feet, 10 inches. Scrambles are open to the public and much like open tennis, great for socializing and meeting new people.

The rest of the weekend’s events included a luncheon buffet after the scramble, a pig roast on Saturday, as well as ten dollar golf and tennis on Saturday. We exceeded what we had even hoped would be the turnout of the event. Special thanks to all who made the event possible! What a great success!

We also had a special raffle for an individual membership for the 2012 season going on throughout the weekend. The lucky winner was Su Oliver! Congratulations Su!

In Twilight League news, low gross AND low net both go to Myron Curtis and Bob Campbell this week. Low gross with a 130 and low net with a 98.

On July 9th, there will be a women’s tennis round robin followed by a luncheon if there is enough interest. Please call, 348-2379, or stop by the club to reserve your space.

The next dinner will be a family favorite potluck on July 12th.The cost will be ten dollars a person. Please sign up in advance.

Tuesday July 5th, we had a lovely bunch of ladies on the course. Low gross first tier Jean Hutchinson with a 40. Low net first tier was Barbara Whitman with a 35. Low gross second tier was Mimi Gerstell with a 37and low net second tier was Ginny Perry with a 37. Low putts was a tie with Linda Stratton with a 14 and Su Oliver with a 14. Way to go ladies!

Things are picking up steam here at the Island Country Club. I’ve received much positive feedback about the article and it is greatly appreciated! If you would like to send me constructive criticism (positive or negative), news, or just a general inquiry, e-mail me at Kimberly.l.grindle@gmail.com

For the Friday Scrambles, first low gross went to Wylie Shaw, Bill Anderson, Suzanne Banghart, and Mimi Gerstell with a 29. Second low gross went to Chris Harris, Paul Landry, and Bob Cummins with a 30. To sign up, please stop by the Clubhouse no later then Tuesday June 14th. AM and PM tee times are available.

Tuesday June 21st will be the first evening dinner at the ICC. Our favorite cook, Janet Snowden will be preparing a delicious meal consisting of tossed salad, roast pork loin, baked haddock, mushroom ravioli, and chocolate cake. The cost will be $17 per person. Space is limited so be sure to sign up as soon as possible!

June 6th was Clubhouse Manager Karen Galella’s birthday! Friends Jean Hutchinson and Suzanne Banghart presented her with a monster golf club about 4 feet tall to match a basket ball sized golf ball and tee they have given her for her birthday in past years.

We would like to congratulate the class of 2011 and the newest addition to our staff Aimme Cardoza on their graduation. Cardoza is Janet Snowden’s granddaughter and Katie Thompson’s daughter and we are happy to welcome her to the staff.

If you were here on Monday, June 6th you would’ve witnessed a battle of the ages, literally. Keith Hoover and Dana Douglass (the Old Fogies) played a scramble against Sam Grindle and Connor Morey (the Flying Ladies, a reference to a ladies ball that was a pre-game gift by Keith Hoover to the “youngsters.”;) At the end of it all, the two teams ended up with a tie. I think a rematch is planned.

Golf Quote of the Week: “I'm about five inches from being an outstanding golfer.

If you read last week’s article, you’ll know that we prayed for sunshine and apparently our prayers were answered! I am writing this on Memorial Day and here on Deer Isle, the day is muggy and the temperature at late afternoon is just above 80 degrees. This is a drastic change from this time last week which was full of fog and rain. At 4am this morning, we experienced a strong thunderstorm with bright flashes of lightening and torrents of rain. That’s Maine for you, don’t like the weather, wait a minute.

We did have a Friday morning scramble on May 27th. The public is welcomed to participate in scrambles every Friday morning starting 9am. If you would like to play please sign up in advance in the clubhouse or show up between 8:30am-8:45am the morning of. Low gross went to Bob Muskat, Jon Hellstedt, Marylin Mehalic, and Suzanne Banghart with a 30. Low putts went to Walt Epply, Jack Moser, Marylin Schroer, and Hal Burdo. Closest to the pin for the men went to Bill Anderson with 19 feet and 3 and ½ inches. And believe it or not, Marilyn Mehalic had closest to the pin with just one inch! Way to go Marilyn!

The ladies were looking lovely on Tuesday May 31 on the beautiful sunny last day of May. First low gross went to Jean Hutchinson with a 38. Second low gross wentto Sharon Hellstedt with 42. Low putts went to Thela Leach with a 14. Low net went to Suzanne Banghart with a 30. Jean Hutchinson and Karen Galella had a chip in on hole 5, Galella for a birdie on that hole. Way to go ladies!

Tennis court one is now open! We are in hopes that courts two and three will be ready by the end of the week. Please call us (348-2379) and make a reservation in advance if you would like to play. Open tennis will start on Wednesday, June 1 at 9am.

The Mike Haskell Masonic Charity Golf Tournament will be taking place on Sunday, June 19th. The format will be a four person scramble. The proceeds will benefit Marine Lodge #122 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. We strongly encourage all to participate. To sign up, please stop by the Clubhouse no later then June 14th. AM and PM tee time’s are available.

ShaunWebb, our resident golf pro, has called and said he will be returning from Florida in mid June. Shaun provides lessons and clinic for all ages. If you would like to book a lesson with Shaun or are interested in more information, please call the clubhouse at 348-2379. Shaun also has a website, you can check it out at http://www.swgolfacademy.com. Kristen Eberdt is available for tennis lessons on a call ahead basis. Please give us a call so we can let her know you are interested in scheduling a lesson. She will be offering lessons on a steadier schedule starting in July.

Golf Quote of the Week: “The difference between golf and government is that in golf you can't improve your lie.” George Deukmejian

Fairway Café Opening Memorial Day Weekend

Who turned off the sunshine? The Island Country Club certainly hasn’t had a part in that. Like everyone else, we are currently experiencing sun deprivation and as a result our visitor count has been down. Only the “diehards”, as we like to call them, tend to go out in this weather. Those are the golf or tennis players you see in rain, snow, fog, hail, ice, or a hurricane out on the course. In Maine we tend to experience all those sorts of weather, sometimes even on the same day. Do you consider yourself a diehard golf or tennis player? If not, please join us in hoping and wishing the sun makes an appearance soon. Remember that the ICC has free Wifi and is the perfect spot for checking e-mail and getting a cup of steaming, hot Susie Q’s Sunrise blend coffee while waiting for this weather to change.

If you’ve visited the club you might notice that the clubhouse has gotten some T.L.C. from our lovely clubhouse manager Karen Galella and me. We’ve been busy the past two weeks putting a fresh coat of paint on the clubhouse walls, trim, and bulletin boards. The trim and walls are covered in a paint called “chocolate froth” and it’s a lovely light brown color that changes depending on the light. Members have commented on how fresh and bright it has made the clubhouse. Stop in and check it out for yourself!

The Fairway Café will be reopening on May 27th and will be open from 11am to 2pm all summer long, seven days a week. We are excited to see what delicious creations Janet Snowden and her daughter Katie Thompson will prepare for us (Personally, I am excited for the return of the spinach salad, which Janet has made a permanent dish on the regular menu)!

Our friends at NETCO were here this week and the tennis courts are now netted and lined. We were in hopes that the courts would be ready by this upcoming weekend, but the weather hasn’t been ideal. The courts also have to be conditioned for at least week if not more until they will be ready for play. We’ll keep you posted on the status of the courts!

Our new superintendent Greg Kolakowski is fitting in nicely and many members have complimented him on how great the facilities are looking. He’s also brought the newest ICC member along with him, Duffer the 11 year old sheepdog! Duffer is a sweetheart and I’ve taken quite a liking to him. He’s very friendly and loves to greet members. Oh and Greg is quite nice too.

Have you liked us on Facebook? We have a page where we regularly post information about the weather, clubhouse, courts, course, and more. To find us, simply logon to Facebook and type “Island Country Club” in the search bar.

As always ICC news can be submitted to me via e-mail (Kimberly.l.grindle@gmail.com), my mailbox at the clubhouse, or phone (207-348-2379). You can always visit the ICC on the web at www.islandcountryclub.net.

Quote of the Week: “The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime.” Babe Ruth
